In 1988, the James A. Michener Art Museum opened as an independent, non-profit cultural institution dedicated to preserving, interpreting and exhibiting the art and cultural heritage of the Bucks County region. Named for Doylestown's most famous son, the Pulitzer-Prize winning writer, the Museum has two locations. In Doylestown, the galleries are ensconced within the massive stone walls that were part of the Bucks County Jail. In 2003, the Museum opened a new satellite location in the heart of the historic arts colony of New Hope.
