Buck House, a National Historic Landmark, will enjoy a rich multi-faceted guided-tour combining literature, history, philosophy and art.
Henry C. Mercer was born in Doylestown in 1856 and died in 1930. Rarely does one man shine in as many fields as this Renaissance man who went to Harvard and traveled the world. His legacy includes architecture, art (his decorative tiles are in major building worldwide), history, archaeology and anthropology. He built two concrete castles that are filled with his treasures, both of which are National Historic Landmarks. Visit the Mercer Museum which dramatically displays Mercer's early America collection including antique furnishings, a whaling boat and fire engine suspended overhead. Don't miss his home, the Fonthill Museum. The house has 44 rooms elaborately adorned with an incredible array of original handcrafted tiles, as well as tiles and prints from around the world.
The James A. Michener Art Museum, named after Doylestown's famous Pulitzer Prize winner writer, is situated on a beautifully restored historic site. The museum houses the finest collection of Pennsylvania Impressionist paintings in the world and offers nationally touring and regional exhibitions. The "Creative Bucks County" exhibit features the work of Oscar Hammerstein II, Moss Hart, Pearl S. Buck, George S. Kaufmann and other Bucks County legends that have lived and worked in Bucks County.
